Both stories involve feuding between families with different values, and end in the deaths of young people because they believed their love would overcome the hostilities, or that they were set apart from the feuding and their love had nothing to do with the rest of the world!.

A brief history of R&J: Juliet's family (the Capulets) thought of themselves as "old money" or aristrocracy, while Romeo's family (the Montagues) were up-and-comers!. Juliet was promised to a groom in an arranged marriage, and she did not care for him!. Today, we would think that Juliet had been sold!. She was 14 years old and a virgin!.

Romeo crashed a party at the Capulet's with his friends and immediately fell in love with Juliet!. Juliet, likewise, fell in love with Romeo, though she didn't know who he was at the time!. When she asked her cousin who he was, he recognized Romeo as a family enemy and sent Capulets to oust him along with his friends!.

Later, Romeo went back to the Capulet's villa and met Juliet on her balcony!. She slept with him when he promised marriage!.

Numerous threats and taunts were passed between the young men of the two families until Juliet's cousin was killed accidentally by Romeo, and he was banished from the city!.

And, now, a little history of Maria and Tony: Maria was a Puerto Rican living in NYC!. Tony was Polish (or Italian, as some believe, but it really doesn't matter)!. These two groups were as different as the Capulets and Montagues, and had their own set of friends who defended their "turf" just as the young men in R&J did theirs!. In both stories, neither gang cared much for the lovers falling in love with each other, and hostilities were fueled by their union!.

Suffice it to say, both Romeo and Tony died; Romeo by his own hand, and Tony by gang violence!. Juliet died, too, also by her own hand, but Maria survived to walk away!. This is the main difference in the two stories!.

Other minor differences: Maria's best friend, Anita, warned her repeatedly to stay away from Tony!. Juliet's only friend was her nurse, who actively encouraged the romance!. Tony's and Maria's parents are largely absent from the story; the conflict in their relationship was one of ancestry and culture, while Romeo and Juliet were of the same country and culture!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

While the person above practically did your homework for you, if you are interested in actually learning, both are available for viewing on DVD!. Several versions of R&J have been filmed!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
