Question: In "Wicked" and the "Wizard of Oz," why was water deadly to the Wicked Witch of the East!?
I just recently saw the Broadway hit "Wicked" (which was an absolute MASTERPIECE), but I never did catch the explanation on why the Wicked Witch of the East couldn't stand to get wet!? Anyone out there know!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you read the book "Wicked" it explains that Elphaba was allergic to water!. She can't even bathe!. There is a scene in which Fiyero is watching Elphaba as she is putting oil on her body and he figures out that this is how she stays clean since she cannot bathe!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

First off, the Wicked Witch of the East, Nessarose(wheelchair), was crushed by Dorothy's house!.

Elphaba(green skin), the Wicked Witch of the West, has no problem with water, its simply a rumor spread by Madame Morrible!.

During I'm Not That Girl it starts raining and nothing happens to her!.

The rumors are shouted by angry Ozians in Thank Goodness:

Angry Man-I hear her soul is so unclean pure water can melt her!
Fiyero- What!?!
Ozians- Melt her!?! Please somebody go and melt her!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Dont you mean the witch of the west/ Elphaba, if you mean Elphaba she fakes it so that Dorothy will throw the water over her so she can go through a trap door and go live with Fiyero!.

As Fiyero says that there are lots of tunnels and secret passagesways!.

And earlier in the show, during Thank Goodness the lyrics are "I'VE HEARD her sole is so unclean, pure water will melt her" "I've heard" lets the audience know its a rumour no one knows for sure!. hope this helps!

PS!. This is why before the finale Fiyero says "IT WORKED!" and Elphaba pops out from a trap door on the stage floor!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

She's allergic to water which is kind of ironic because you think that "all things green" would need water to survive!. But in her case she's allergic!. like the post above me said, She uses oil to keep clean!. The musical changes that part but in the book it remains true that she is allergic to water and that she does die when Dorothy splashes her with the bucket of water!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

they think its because her soul is so dirty but it is not true!. its just a rumor that the ozians spread!.
in the song "thank goodness" it says "ive heard her soul is so unclean pure water can melt her"

i hope i helped! :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

i don't think there's a real explaination!.
it's the same reason there's a talking lion, scarecrow, and tinman!.
there's a lot of weird stuff in it, it's just how things are in that "world!."
