Macbeth's downfall is a little more complex then that,!. First Macbeth murdered his King and in the time of Shakespeare Kings ruled by "divine right' which meant they were God's chosen, they ruled on Earth in God's place!.

So by murdering Duncan, Macbeth betrayed his friend, committed treason and sinned against God by perverting His will!.

After wards Macbeth became a despot and bad ruler!. Proof that he was an inferior to Duncan!.

You can actually argue that he had no free choice -that his fate was sealed when it was prophesied that he would rule until forest come to his castle (Mac duff's army hid themselves with the branches of the forest) and he could not be killed by any man born of woman!. It gave Macbeth a false hope until he found out that Mac duff was born of woman because he was delivered by a C section from the body of his dead mother (he was then born of a corpse)

In Shakespeare's time Macbeth's death was an act of divine retribution!. And one does not have free choice when confronted by the hand of God!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was actually his "conscience" that was his downfall!. He underestimated how "guilty" he would feel about the bad things he did, and the "ghost of his conscience" haunted him, and made him feel so terrible, that his "guilty conscience" contributed to his downfall!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
