Question Home

Position:Home>Theater & Acting> I'm trying out for a musical. Any suggestions?

Question:Help! I need a song for my audition.

-It should be one that a bass could sing.

-I'd like to sing something comical (if your suggestion isn't in that area, that's fine)

-It should be, for the most part, appropriate (as much I like the songs from Avenue Q, they're aren't gonna work)

Anyone?

Tough to find solos in a bass range. Be sure to look for music in vocal SELECTIONS, as opposed to vocal scores. THe selections are usually transposed to keys that are comfortable for lower and more limted ranges.
Here are some songs that are funny and should be easy to sing in your range:
"Reviewing the Situation" (Oliver)
"Be Like the Bluebird" (Anything Goes)
"Olympus is a Lonely Town" (Olympus on My Mind)
"The Legacy" (On the 20th Century)
Stay away from pop tunes. They are usually written for the pop singer's specific vocal talents and pop melodies don't always translate well on just piano. Plus, you're auditioning for a theater show in front of theater people, give them what they want to hear. Good Luck!

"The Nicest Kids In Town" from the Hairspray Movie
It is performed by James Marsden

Hello James,

I would think a 50's bass song with the right timing would work fine. Also, Otis Redding's Sitting on the dock of the Bay, was written for a bass singer before it took it and made it his own.

If you want to show range, the National Anthem of the USA is a show peace for a bass and not expected by most to be done. Start on Middle C to stay close to your comfort range. I use B flat and it fits fine.

Remember to smile a lot, and show your teeth, nice clothes, shirt in and look like your ready to go to church with your parents. Someone that old will be judging you! LOL

Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson is awesome but it isn't from a musical.

Try something like Mr. Cellophane from Chicago! Musicals are amazing! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

The songs by Nathan from the musical Guys and Dolls should work really good.

Bass can sing every song, depends of the tune... You may try with "Easy to be hard" from "Hair" or "Let the sunshine in"...
