Jules Fisher designed the lighting for Death of a Salesmen. He used gobos to create different effects. Gobos are like stencils that are placed over the lights to create images. Fisher created leaf motifs and other interesting effects for the play.
After WWII, plays and their production values became more realistic. The world had become more jaded and sophisticated. Cartoony storybook sets and lighting no longer appealed, so designers strived to make productions look realistic and still theatrical.
Note: Thanks for correcting me. I haven't actually used the word since high school and I couldn't remember if it was "gobo" or "global".

In the 50's lighting was used to show the different angles of ones face. A light on the face and a smile, they were happy, change the lighting any you have concern, change it again and you see anger, or even horror on ones face.

Using lights from a side, you see this done in Death of a Salesman, to show time, place and character in ones face, Strong or weakness at the same time but changing into hope.

Nice answer Whitney but theyre called Gobos not Gobals. What other elements do you need to discuss?
