Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Should I quit acting?

Question:I was recently in a play for my school for a drama competition where schools around the state perform separate pieces(I had one of the lead roles although I only appeared a couple of times I did have a lot of lines though.)Awards go out for the play with the best set, costume design(ours won!) etc... And, for every single play a couple of people win an award for having the best performance among the others.

I did not win that award, but that is not why I am not upset-I am very happy for the three people that won. However, when the judges had been critiquing us they didn't seem to like my performance that much-they just merely said: "Oh yeah, you had a good voice" in sort of a "whatever....next!" tone.

This is what hurt me. I had worked so hard for this play, and my hard work wasn't even recognized or appreciated. I feel that maybe this is a sign that I am maybe just not good at acting and I should just stop to make it easier for everyone. Should I just forever quit acting? no flames!

No. Don't let a thing like that discourage you. I have had many different opinions on my acting and singing ability in the past. I've had directors and other actors in shows i've been in tell me what a great job i'm doing and i've had other people who don't think I did a very good job at all. There will always be people who tell you you aren't good but even if you aren't (which i highly doubt) you can keep working at it. Just don't give up.Hey, if you don't try to keep going you'll never know what would have happened if you did.

never give up!

need to be more fit if you're fat, need to become prettier if you're
ugly,if you're average looking, then you have to train alot more.but since this is not a drama,if you think you can't do it anymore, maybe thats not your talent, try doing something else

girl if this is your dream keep going remember you have to fall a million times on your face before you can walk. big stars went through millions of rejections before they became stars.work hard and stay focus

Not at all! If it's really your passion then I say you should definitely go for it! You should not be disheartened with the comments but if you're really worried then talk to the judges and ask if there was anything you could have improved, then you can use their advice and adapt it for your next performance! I also love acting and the most valuable thing you can use is another's advice..

I wouldn't give up just yet. There are alot of people and alot of different judges. Just because those judges might not have seen the greatness of your talent does not mean other judges
would be the same.
Hang in there and keep telling yourself I can do this.

omg, you should never quit your dream. acting, along with being a great dream, is a very good career. i definately do not think you should quit.

YES

Definitely not. This is a cliche, but it's true:These things should make you work harder and try to be better and better. It's too early to be pessimistic.

Acting's a tough business. Everybody in it works hard at it, whether they succeed or not. If you're hurt because your own work wasn't appreciated or recognized, understand that getting appreciated for effort isn't part of the life of an actor.
If you really want to become an actor, work hard, perfect your craft, make yourself the best you can be, for the love of the art.
Appreciate yourself. Learn. Practice. Persevere.
You may do well.
