Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Should I do the musical next year?

Question:PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
I am 12 years old and am in 6th grade at a middle school. My school shows a musical (6 freakin times) in which the actors and stagecrew are students. I was in it this year and it was very difficult we've been practicing since January and opening night was Friday April 4th!!! We have practiced a LOT and a lot of $$$ went into this. I shed MANY tears over this play for various reasons. I'm not even that good at singing OR dancing! Though, when I got on stage I loved it. It was so exciting and, well, just plain COOL! I REALLY wanna do it next year but one problem... I am really active in sports and I play soccer year round except in the summer when I swim. My parents say I probaly can't do both because I have to miss the first 3 soccer games + sum practices! :( I REALLY wanna do both! I COULD do softball next spring but my soccer team would be mad @ me! Should I do the play??????? Please give me your opinion, why, and your age so I know whos giving me this!!! THANKS

Yes. This would broaden your horizons beyond just sports. But, ultimately it's up to you. Good luck and God Bless.

to long way to long you shouldnt

yes

Wow, 4 months is a while! How much money did you put into it, and what for?

As much stress as it causes, I think you would agree that finally performing it is totally worth it! For my school show in the fall I was there every day for two months and stressed and stressed and worried but, as always, it came together in the end and it was the most fun process I ever went through! I guess it all comes down to what you love to do more - if you love soccer, then play. If you love performing more, then perform. It's that simple.

Paige, I am a 57 year old retired professional actor and theatre professor... also a voice coach. First let me say that all Music and English teachers who think it's neat to inflict a musical on everyone before high school (or better yet college) should be shot. Your rehearsal schedule is INSANE even before we discuss the 12 year old voice trying to sing under questionable coaching. The voice is fragile and needs maturing and care. Play soccer (I was a football player and did my first play as a senior in high school) and return to theatre later if you wish. Theatre is wonderful and will always be there.

I am a freshman in high school, and I have the same problem as you! I want to play soccer, but I also want to do the play. I can't do both. I haven't made up my mind yet, because I'm not sure what show my school is doing next year. Some advice I can give you:
-If the play is a show you are interested in, go for it! If the show itself doesn't sound fun, don't waste your time doing a show you really don't want to.
-I'm assuming you like soccer, since you play it year-round, so is there a way that you can audition for the play, and if you don't get a part you want, you can still play soccer? It's always good to have a backup!
-Just really do what you feel you would have more fun with. You're young, so it's all about what's more fun for you!
Good Luck!
