Position:Home>Theater & Acting> I need song suggestions for an audition...?

Question:On Monday, I am going to attend an audition for my musical theatre class. This audition will determine the play that we are going to do and the roles that we will play.

Any suggestions? It has to be a song from a musical.
Also, if possible, can you cite the website wherein I can get a karaoke version/minus one version of the song?

BTW, I am only 14 and I have a low voice.

Thanks! :)

First of all please allow me to debunk a lot of mistakes people who have no idea what they're talking about are throwing at you.
I believe the first person told you to sing a song from Oliver! called "consider yourself of the family". WRONG the song is called "Consider Yourself" and it's song by a young boy; big no-no for a girl. (I should know I just finished performing in a production of Oliver! a few hours ago)
Secondly I saw several people telling you to sing songs from: Wicked, Spamalot, Chicago, and Spring Awakening, Seussicle, and Avenue Q. While they are all fantastic musical they are widely over done and should be avoided at auditions along with Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, High School Musical, and Legally Blond the Musical. Also don't listen to anyone who tells you to do a song that is NOT from musical theater.
Finally I must warn you that karaoke versions of songs are not the way to go. They have been altered dramatically and wont teach you the notes or dynamics. Your best bet is to find a simple song and get the sheet music for it. For you, as you seem to be a young alto, I would recommend "As Long As He Needs Me" from Oliver! it's a relatively simple piece if you sing the right measures and gives you a chance to show a great deal of emotion. Also the song could fit a number of characters which would work to your benefit.
Break a leg and best whishes!

A good song that you can give some really powerful volume to is 'Consider yourself one of the family' from the musical Oliver. Look on the web for Oliver the musical for help

try popular from the musical wicked and if you need a karaoke version you can bye them at alot of music stores or maybe get it free on the internet

You should sing....

"Never Never Land" - ?
"What Ever Happened To My Part" - Spamalot
"Here I Am" - Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
"I Got The Sun In The Morning" - Annie Get Your Gun
"Home" - The Wiz

You can find karaoke Cd's for these songs on line, but it will take a while for it to come in the mail

Check out the songs from Chicago. They're all jazz and for altos. My favorite audition songs from there are:
"All That Jazz"
"Funny Honey"
"Roxie"
They're all great songs and they make me happy. :3
Look through musical theater songs for young women. You'll most likely find a good one there. I doubt you'll be able to find a really good one for Monday. You probably should have prepared for this in advance, honestly.
Just remember, don't be shy. Belt that song as loud as you can, but make it sound good.
Break a leg!

I'm Not That Girl from Wicked. (might be a little old, but still a great song!)
Maybe from "Annie"
Home from "Beauty and the Beast"
I Have Confidence from "Sound of Music"
Defying Gravity from "Wicked"
"Popular" from Wicked

All of these songs are from dramatic parts of the show and need to be acted out well so get in to character before you sing. The songs are all song by people who are very different, so pick the one that fits you best. Good Luck!

P.S. you should be able to get sheet music for most of these at www.sheetmusicdirect.us you can transpose it to almost any key on this site too. Try itunes for accompanant tracks

If you have a low voice, i would def. recommend doing something that showcases your range as opposed to trying to stretch for the high notes.

I suggest

"distant melody"

i dreamed a dream (first 16 or 32 bars)

BEST OF LUCK

I love Wicked and all, but I would highly advise you NOT to sing it. It's way too over-sung.

Here are some alternatives:

"Always True to You" from Kiss Me, Kate
"My New Philosophy' from You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown
"My Strongest Suit" from Aida
"All for You", "Notice Me, Horton", "It's Possible" from Seussical
"Not For the Life of Me" from Thoroughly Modern Millie
"The Life of the Party" from The Wild Party
"Show Off" from The Drowsy Chaperone
"Diva's Lament" from Spamalot
"Whispering" from Spring Awakening
"Mix Tape" from Avenue Q

Unfortunately, I have no idea where to find background music for any of these (except Whispering). But here's a site with MP3 downloads of other background music: http://www.shocktreatmentnetwork.com/vid...
You could also try YouTube.

Hope I helped! (^:
