There was a really revealing, and atypical, article in the London Times this week. The URL is http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/t...

When I say 'atypical' I mean that this is the first interview of Jodhi May's in which she seems so open and so giving of personal information. You are right to have picked up on the fact that it was an extremely rare event for Jodhi May to be anything other than passionate about the craft of acting, or the project she was working on at the time of the interview, but certainly not about herself. She has had consistent and solid walls up around more personal opinions and details.

If you have searched the internet for information, I am surprised to find that you have not found http://www.jodhimaydomain.us (my site) of use. There are many many full citations there, purchasing links (when applicable), notices of new work, a complete filmography-- including radio and stage work as well as television appearances, and an active forum. Not to mention multimedia clips of most all of her work, even some that have not been readily available. I would start there for information and a taste of other work from Ms. May.

As for the British perception of her and her acting. Having read most everything written about Jodhi May in the media, I can only relay my own observations on this matter. First, Jodhi May has predominately worked in the UK on UK projects, which means most of the literature on her work comes from the British press. In my experience, it is extremely rare that her work is reviewed negatively. She has been lauded relatively recently for her performance as the character, 'Una', in David Harrower's Blackbird, a part which Ms May originated in 2005. Even her television work receives positive recognition. Last December (2007), Ms. May appeared in the series' finale of The Street (BBC Drama series), as Jean, a mother who survived the death of her infant son and her elderly mother only to confront and forgive their killer. Currently, she is receiving head turning reviews for her performance as 'Evelyne Adams' in Flashbacks of a Fool with Daniel Craig. These are advanced reviews because the films opens on April 18th in the UK.

This is all to contrast a very obvious lack of recognition of Jodhi May's work in British awards for television, film and theatre. Besides an early career award at Cannes for Best Actress (1988), which she shares with her co-actors, Barbara Hershey and Linda Mvusi from A World Apart (1988), and another festival award for her performance in Sister My Sister, she has garnered very little awards recognition. I cannot say why this is, especially given the fact of the enormous amount of positive reviews her work has received.

It also complicates how one might assess how the British receive her work. I don't know if anyone can really answer that question with any accuracy for you. I might venture to say, they respect her work but do not feel an enormous amount of connection to her??? It's just a guess, though.

And, as for her stage work, well, she has only done six plays that I know -- counting Blackbird just once. They are Blackbird (2005 & 2006), the Seagull (2003), Platonov (2001), the Talking Cure (2003), Far Away (in French) (2002), and Jerusalem Syndrome (2000). She may still be building this part of her CV. That being said, her reviews for Blackbird were incredible. I would bet that is a good omen for more of those to come whenever she finds her way back to the stage.

I hope this has been of some use to you, and perhaps too reassuring to find that there is information on Jodhi May on the internet and in libraries. http://jodhimaydomain.us (my site) should get your searching started, with all its article citations.
