You play could revolve around a secret connection among your 3 characters. You could adjust that to fit a play for 2 characters fairly easily.

The play could be about a series of mysteries that tie the two characters together in some way. An example could be long-lost relatives. However, you could also change the context. If you wanted to look at writing a historical play, your characters could be rulers of a kingdom with the same blood line. If futuristic, one character could be a clone of the other.

One character could have been present during a murder - but wasn't consciously aware of it. The other one would obviously be the murderer.

Other connections include doctor-patient, government leader-slave, and outlaw-law abiding citizen.

Once you pick a theme for your play, you could organize the structure in any number of ways. Your first act might include a similar event that happens to both characters or the same event that includes both characters. This would begin the mystery. Why do the characters have a vague memory of each other?

The second act could include similar issues as the first. This event would be more serious/mysterious/harmful/etc., depending on what you want to write. This act would be used to build suspense. Why are both characters there, for example?

The next part of your play could consist of a means to try to understand the connection. Your characters still do not know of a connection, but they suspect something is wrong. These investigations could be in the form of dreams or hallucinations; asking questions of others; looking at family/town history; etc.

Whenever you decide to end your script, the mystery could be revealed in a profound way. 1) The audience, not the characters, learn about the mystery connection in some way. This can include the tragic death of either character, or both. Alternatively, you could set up a reunion between the characters. Also, the characters could fight each other because of the connection, or you could have a peaceful ending.

It all depends on the theme you choose, obviously, but I hope this helps!
