another reason macbeth is ambitious, is the fact he wants to proove to his wife, he can be the man she says she desires.
Throughout the whole play she manipulates and twists macbeth till he aspires to her thinking. Even in the scene just before macbeth kills the king he is wanting to back out, she ploys him to not be a coward and to stand up and become what he is destined to. Once macbeth was king then lady macbeth could rule knowing she would always have the upper hand over macbeth.

Macbeth is definitely ambitious along with his wife. I think the main reason though as to why he is ambitious is because he wants to be king. Thinking about it there are really no other reasons as to why he is ambitious. He kills the King to become King. He kills his best friend Banqo so he can stay King and attempts to kill Banqo's son Fleance so he can't take over bring King. The root of all of Macbeth's ambition was Power and the will to keep it.

My interpretation is that he is ambitious because of his wife period. Lady MacBeth is ambition personified and she seduces MacBeth with it. There is no other reason for his ambition.
