Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Need your opinion - Aspiring singer/actor but majoring in an unrelated field in

Question:What do you think?? I figured I could always seek singing opportunities around and continue my vocal training + join an Acting workshop or two. I was thinking of doing Advertising in college because of the realistic thought that going to an Acting course doesn’t ultimately promise one a steady Acting career. I’ve often read about a couple of young actors these days who didn’t have an acting background (if they do, they probably only sign up for intensive workshops). Sophia Bush from One Tree Hill was studying Journalism when she auditioned for and won a part in the TV series. America Ferrera does Theatre but she combines it with International Business (I don’t know if she’s still balancing them with her acting schedule). Music-wise, Carrie Underwood did Broadcast Journalism b4 she took a semester off and went on American Idol. That sort of got me thinking if someone is destined for an acting/singing career, he/she will eventually find a way to get discovered.

I'm the same way. I've known I wanted to act since I could talk but I also know the chances of making are slim. In my opinion, majoring in something you know you can make a career out of is an extremely smart move, and you can always minor in theater, plus most colleges make it very easy to get a degree to teach theater if you minor or major in it. The way I look at it, you could go to the best acting school in the world and take all the acting classes you want, but that doesn't make any you better of a performer than the next person who's just really driven.
