Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Do you think R-rated content in plays and musicals can take away it?

Question:I know that theatre is telling a story, and that life can be R-rated...

but like in Spring Awakening?
or RENT?

these are good, but couldn't they tell the story in a cleaner way?

If you say "they were showing the truth"

or

"Its just the show"....

can back that up?

THANKS!! I just want you opinion

They could tell the story in a cleaner way, but it wouldn't have the same impact. The writers and composers of these shows are trying to elicit a very specific emotion from their audience, and the impact is often lost when watered down. Live theatre, even more than film, is about personal connections with the actors because you can see them in real life. You are not removed from the action, so it is easier to make you fell their pain/anger/happiness. To understand the characters, you must be made to feel as they do, and showing a PG enactment of an actual R rated situation mutes the emotional connection.

It's a play about a specific time and place. That language and that subject matter are part of that time and place. If someone does not want to hear the language or view the subject matter in that play, there are plenty of others that they are perfectly welcome to attend. It is not our call. It is the author's call. It is *their* play, not ours.

Mary Poppins is right around the corner. But it f****** s****.

RENT isn't going away because of the r-rated content. It is going away because it has been on for so long. Most shows don't even run for as long as RENT did. Did Spring Awakening close? With that musical, I do believe that it went off because of its content, if it went off at all. I think that RENT is a great show, but I don't have much respect for teenagers having sex on stage-I just don't.
