Wicked definitely by far.

The current Broadway cast is:
Elphaba- Stephanie J. Block
G(a)linda- Annaleigh Ashford
Madame Morrible- Miriam Margolyes
The Wizard- Lenny Wolpe
Fiyero- David Burnham
Nessarose- Cristy Candler
Boq- Ben Liebert
Dr. Dillamond- Steven Skybell
Chistery- Jonathan Warren

I heard the lion king is really good, Personally, I would see the little mermaid, but I would only see it to see Sherie Rene Scott perform.

If it is your first broadway show, the Lion King is just a great piece....

but what do I know...I've never even been to New York!!!

rent
wicked
the lion king
and crybaby

wicked by far! you would never regret seeing it! take my advice i have seen them all and wicked is so amazing from the tech to the acting and vocals! this or the lion king would me my choices! do remember broadway is not formal so you sholdn't dress like it's a wedding. Wear slacks, nice shirt and tie and your ready for a great show!

Here's a short few words about each I have seen here in the city -

Hairspray - Fun, silly, 60s motown, good show
The lion king - Big and amazing, good music
Crybaby - Haven't seen it yet
The little mermaid - Crappy production, okay music
Grease - Even more crappy
Mary poppins - Disappointing, but she flies once
Rent - I would wait for the original cast to come back
Wicked - Decent show, okay music, awesome effects
Adding machine - Haven't seen it yet

If you wife would like a good story and a big, splashy show, I would go for Lion King. If she might like something really girl-oriented, then Wicked. If you wanted big and colorful and silly, I'd go for Hairspray. You can check out short clips of all of these on YouTube.
