some authors like Shakespeare didn't include many stage directions in their plays because its clear on the text what the characters actions are, but stage directions are effective because they help you (as an actor) get a better understanding of what the character is doing and feeling. plus sometimes the author sets up the play a certain way and stage directions help the director get a better vision of it.

Without them the actors wouldn't know when and were to enter, exit, sit stand or do any kind of action

Is this for homework?

Even as a person outside the theater industry that's pretty much common sense...

It allows the show to run smoother. It is a quick way to say where the director wants all of the actors and actresses

They are Not Only Effective but Essential , Elementary and Fundamental.
