Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Need Headshot tips and tricks guide for New Actors!?

Question:I'm just starting out as an actor and as I'm moving to Los Angeles in a couple of months, I want to get some great commercial headshots done by the industry photographers there - but I'm super nervous and I don't know anything about posing!

I just don't want to come across as a total beginner. Does anyone know of a good website where I can learn everything about posing for professional actor's headshots?

Thanks,

Linda, 22

Yeah, there are tons. One good L.A. website about posing for. actors' headshots is:

They don't really teach you anything about headshots in acting class. You have to learn as you do it. And L.A. is such a tough market for actors, nothing else comes close. Your picture has to look super professional or the agents will dismiss you as a noobie before you even get a chance to audition. It's pretty cut-throat out there, but it can be done! :)

Good luck!

Why dont you take some classes? They prepare you for all of that stuff

If I were you I wouldn't practice 'posing' because that's exactly how it will come out in your pictures. In headshots you should try to look as natural and open as possible. A good headshot photographer will be able to achieve this. The best are able to put you at ease so that you don't even think about the pictures being taken. Chris Macke in NY is really good but expensive. Best of luck to you though.

Don't worry about "posing". A good photographer will guide you and tell you what to do. S/he should also make your feel comfortable and relaxes so that you get the best shots possibles. Also, given that's it's a "head shot" and not a full body shot, the majority of the "posing" is in your face and expressions.

Check out reproductions.com, they have listing of headshot photographers in Los Angeles (and New York, so enter a LA zip code so you go to the right site).

Check out the portfolios online to see other people headshots and what stands out. Check out their expressions, posture, hair/makeup, clothes, etc.

Good luck!!
