Position:Home>Theater & Acting> I am thinking about auditioning for a local production of High School Musical, b

Question:I took ballet and jazz with a very well-known studio for 8 years, and i also was an officer in my high school dance team for 3 years, so the dancing is no problem. I have also been in my school choir for 3 years, and have performed solos for my church choir in the past. However, i have a deep voice (i am an alto 2) and it's good on some days and bad on others for some reason. I'm really shy, but i want to break out of my box, and acting is always something that i have been really interested in, but i have never had the guts to give it a shot. Can anyone give me some advice? I could use all the help i can get! Thanks so much!

If singing isn't your strong point then start singing every day but do it right. Find some vocal warm ups that work for you and find a song in your vocal range to use for auditions. Being that you have dance skills they can probably use you in the production as there are numerous strong dance numbers depending on how they decide to choreograph it. If you are not currently in dance you may want to jump into a calss to brush up because school dance teams and ballet and jazz are not exactly the basis for what they use in this musical. It will absolutely help you, but this is a very contemporary musical and depending on the type of dance your school did you may need to expand a bit.

If you can go to a voice teacher, that would be great as well. Get to know and love your range. Expanding it takes time so don't push yourself too soon or you could hurt your voice. Look at sites like stageagent.com and musicaltheatreaudition.com.

Also, if you figure out that you truly are an alto don't list alto 2 because that's a choir thing not a theatre thing. An alto is an alto. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocal_range Use this spage and a piano to help you figure your range if you can't get to a voice teacher or get your choir teacher to help. You should also know that just because your choir director placed you in the alto section doesn't mean that's what you are. That's what section you sang in... figure out how high and how low you can sing to get your own range not your choral section. Singe every day but not to the point of vocal fatigue. Practice = better!!!

good luck,

give it a try, you may never know!

iF DANCiNG iS A TALENT OF YOURS, THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM W/ MAKiNG THE ROLE.
WHEN THEY BOOK THESE THiNGS, THEY DON'T REALLY LOOK FOR ACTiNG SKiLLS THEY LOOK FOR THE STUFF THAT THEY KNOW OTHERS CAN'T LEARN, AND DANCiNG WELL TENDS TO BE ONE OF THOSE.
JUST BE CONFiDENT.
GOOD LUCK.

heck niether did i but i have a lead role at my school... plus there is allways a first :)

hello. give it your own, your presence in dance is a major advantage. you'll be great! : }

i understand the want to do theatre, but don't do high school musical for your first show, because a lot of people who only like the movie and are only doing it because its a cool show will try out, and then they'll find they don't like theatre and will ruin the experience. If you want to act, thats great, try participating in less known musicals, to get an idea of a different genre of theatre.

Audition for it definitely. I personally don't like the show, but i think you will have a fun time doing it. heck, even i would have fun doing it even though i don't like it. It's good experience for future roles you might get if you end up liking theatre, and even if you don't get a part it's good audition experience and trust me, audition experience is just as important as actual performing experience. Go for it! and break a leg at the audition!

Why not? In order to get experiance, you have to start with known.

well i think youre safe there isnt too much acting that goes on in musicals (especially in highschool plays) but for your monologue just think...
what is my character talking about
how old is my character
what is my character portraying
and so on...
