Who is the lion supposed to be in the musical Wicked?

Question:I know who the scarecrow and tin man are(I wont spoil it). I have never seen it yet, so what's the story with the cowardly lion in Wicked?

The lion is the small cub Elphaba and Fiyero rescue from the replacement teacher after Doctor Dillamond is taken away. Later, the Tin Man says/sings in March of the Witch Hunters:
...And I'm not the only one! Come on...tell them what she did to you in class that day! How you were just a cub, and she...cub-napped you--!You see--(sings)
The Lion also
Has a grievance to repay
If she'd let him fight his own battles
When he was young
He wouldn't be a coward today!

The lion cub is just a puppet in a cage when Elphie and Fiyero run out of the class room, and during March of the Witch hunters, he's just a tail the Tin Man pulls. They decided not to show Dorothy or the Lion because they wanted to be as far away from the original Wizard of Oz movie as possible.

I haven't seen the musical... in the book, it was a Lion cub that Elphaba rescued from experimentation.

Elphaba rescues a Lion that she takes to Dr. Dillamond. Later she's blamed because if she had let him "fight his own battles when he was young, he wouldn't be a coward today" (from March of the Witch Hunters, I think)

He isn't anyone in particular. Elphaba and Fiyero rescue the cub from the new history teacher that replaced Dr. Dillamond.

Pretty much the same as in Wizard of Oz.

I heard exciting news that Will Smith is going to play that part in the film version.
