He tells then that they have had trouble in their life (poverty etc.) because of Banquo. He says he gave them proof (but we never see this onstage). This is all from Act III sc. i

Macbeth says that even though he has the power to do it he cannot because he has so many influential people around him and he and Banquo move in the same circles.
