Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: how many theathers were originally on broadway?
I know now there are only 4.

There are a lot more than four. Sort of. It's complicated. A theatre does not have to be physically on the street "Broadway" to be on Broadway. The whole area is considered Broadway, and theatres over 500 seats in that area are considered Broadway theatres. There are currently 39 Broadway theaters. Back is the 1920s, during New York's peak theatre era, there were over 60. But yes, only four of them are actually on the actual street.

The theatre district was not always where it is now though. as the city grew and expanded north, the theatre district moved north, from 14th Street to 23rd to 34th to 42nd. There have been dozens of theatres of the actual street "Broadway," most now torn down.

originally there was 1.
