First off, be flattered that your teacher said that. In my opinion, the Narrator is pretty much the female lead in the show. While she's not so much a "character", she pops up throughout the story and sings explanations of what's going on. It's a great role. If I remember right it's mostly a soprano part, but I'm just gathering memories from the thousands of high school/community productions I've seen of it so I could be wrong. And about "Memory," I would pick something different. "Memory," as well as "All That Jazz", "On My Own," etc. are famous for being overdone. Pick a song that isn't done all the time, but isn't so obscure that people won't know what the heck it is. Maybe you should do another Andrew Lloyd Webber song, since he wrote Joseph. That shows the director that you are familiar with and can handle ALW's style. Break a leg!

The Narrator is the biggest part in that show. It is unquestionably the lead. (Along with Joseph.) Tons and tons of singing. (The show is entirely sung - no dialogue.) She narrates, tells the story - sings directly to the audience most of the time. It's an awesome role, very coveted.

the narrator in 'joseph' is actually telling the story to a group of children (in modern times). if memory serves, she never interacts with joseph directly just tells his story so it goes between modern times and the biblical time of joseph.

the narrator is a great part! think really cool sunday school teacher. great vocals, not too rangey. the whole show is sung so you do have to have a strong voice that can withstand a lot of singing

to me (i'm a director) 13 would be a bit young for the narrator, but i don't know what type of production this is and the age range of the people auditioning.

even if you don't get the narrator, do the show! i would say it's mostly a guys show (it's about joseph and his 12 brothers) but all the brothers have wives and you will learn a lot vocally and have a great time.

have a great audition!!

Watch the DVD of the show with Donny Osmond and the fabulous Maria Friedman memory is good song and will show you can handle the vocal demands BUT it is not appropriate for the narrator, she is really funny and the one the audience identifies with I would strongly advise you to pick a more comic song, if you are looking only at the score from Cats I would say sing Macavity, or Gumbie Cat, Mr Mistoffles. I would stick with the Webber musicals in making my selection.
