Position:Home>Theater & Acting> How long should I wait until I try to get an agent and headshots?

Question:I have done several school plays in high school and middle school and am now attending college. I was going to school to be a doctor, but I've decided to follow my dreams and start my acting career. I am planning on getting involved in a community theatre and get involved in open calls, etc.

For those more experienced actors, how much experience should I gain before I decide to look for an agent and get headshots?

You should wait until you have a strong resume of experience and professional training. Community theatre is a good move, but you need professional classes.

you cant get experience if you dont perform right?

I'd go find an agency to help find roles for you

As an actress, i was in about 5 plays, in both school and communtiy, and went to open casting calls, this industry is hard kid, and only the best come out on top, so if you have th slightest doubt have another option, not everyone is that one in a million, but if you are known on the state level, such as myself, where you have competed at state competition, then, you get an agent, but if you are smaller, like only know at your school, get headshots for casting calls...

Get head shots as soon as you are considering answering casting calls...an agent can wait.

Training and experience comes first before an agent. Contrarry to popular belief agents don't find you work. Agents make money off the work you book. Because of this very few agents will work with someone with no experience. Most agents outside of new York work in the film/TV and commercial arenas. community theatre is nice, but does not equate. Start getting involved in film acting classes and with local filmmakers so you can develop a reel. Once you do that, then spend the money to get headshots and approach an agent. You will save money in the long run. how long you shou;d ewait depends on how many projects you can take at one time.

look i am in high school right now i have taken acting classes and improve and plays. I got head shoots as sone as i could i also got an agent right after that....get urself out there or no one will know who u are untill u move 2 the next step and thats head shoots....
