Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Should you see The Wizard of Oz on DVD before going to see the Wicked musical?

Question:I don't think that it is necessary, but maybe be a good 'refresher' and could also get you pumped for the show. While some people say that 'Wicked' has nothing to do with 'The Wizard of Oz', I beg to differ. When you finally see 'Wicked' you may notice that there are clever little hints hidden in there that connect back to 'The Wizard of Oz'. I won't spoil the hidden clues for you, but I think that watching 'The Wizard of Oz' may be a good idea to help get you acclimated to what the characters were originally portrayed as.
I hope this helps!

It doesnt really matter but wicked is awsome:)

You could but it wouldnt make sense too. It wouldnt matter. Wicked focuses on Glinda and Elphaba. If you want to but its not nessicary.

The wizard of oz has nothing to do with Wicked. Wicked is like the prologue to The wizard of oz so i would actually watch it AFTER you see the play and you could make more connection that way. If you are worried about not understanding the musical i would listen to the soundtrack or read a synopsis online. You can also read the book, but it is more adult than the musical itself. I personally LOVE wicked so ENJOY and know that i am so totally jealous that you have tickets! jk!

I would even though the stories are very different because the contrast of the two stories is really interesting and changes how you think about ech one!

It might be interesting to get context, but it doesn't tell the same story.

If you have time, I would recommend reading the book instead.

If you already know the basic story of The Wizard of Oz, you're set to see Wicked. The more you remember of the original plot, tho, the more you'll enjoy the play. As you can tell from the other responses to your question, it is a Great play/storyline. When I saw it at the Pantages Theater in L.A., I loved it as a good theatrical production. I was so jazzed I bought the CD soundtrack in the lobby, took it to car and listened on the way home ... and pushed it to my IPOD and still listen periodically. Every time I go thru the songs, I pick up another nuance of the story, and now find allusions to one's life in the 'real world'. I went back and viewed the Judy Garland movie after seeing Wicked, and was bored with the original ... it just didn't compare with the philosophical depth and entertainment value of Wicked. Long winded answer to say, you're in for a treat.

um it dosnet matter does it and i saw the movie the wizard of oz and then i read the book and it feltt wrong to me because the book and the movie were so different....

There are many things in Wicked that are references to the original Wizard of Oz, but you don't need to see it. In fact, I'd say its better if you watch it after so you can yell at evil little Dorkothy--I mean Dorothy for killing people.

Just a question, do you know when(just the month perhaps) and where you're going to see Wicked?

<}:~) *Defy Gravity*

I'd say watch the DVD before you see the show. That was most people's cases when the show first came out anyways.

And besides, it's fun watching the show and trying to link the scenes to the scenes from the film.

There are always two sides of the story.
You dont need to watch Wizard of Oz before watching this musical. It would be better if you at least know the story of the original story to follow along with this twist, the story from the witch's standpoint. You would REALLY ENJOY it more and see how creative the writer was in creating this piece.
