I think this largely depends on what agency the model is signed to. On the better side, the models will be respected and treated well, have fun with their jobs, get to travel to interesting places, make good money, and have an inside edge on fashion and design.
On the worse side, the models will be treated as little more than mobile mannequins, be bullied and forced to act in ways they don't want to, will have negative pressure to be thin...et cetera.

As for what they should do for success...there is not a formula that you can follow. However, some tips: don't ever sign with an agency that makes you pay. They should be paying you. Also, don't lower your own standards just to get a specific gig. It is kind of a slippery slope.
