Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Acting at 22?

Question:I am 22 years old and I want to be an actress. I've always wanted to just never knew where to begin I know I need to take acting classes I've sent my names in to The NewYork Film Acadmey for info so I can enroll myself. My question is do you think I'm to old to start so many new actresses are much younger than me. I wanted to start early but my parents wanted me to be normal and go to school have friends and now that I see what some of the actresses my age are going through with drugs and stuff I agree with their choice. but now I'm ready to start my life and fulfill my dreams do you think it's to late?

You're never too old to start and I believe you're starting the right way, with education. Obviously if you plan to enroll there you don't need a way of supporting yourself or you already have that figured out so I'm not worried about that :-)

One thing you have going over your slightly younger counterparts is a tad more life experience. Only a tad though. You're still very young and honestly I doubt you'll be the only one there your age. Maybe you can search MySpace and Facebook for current students?

If you do need a way to generate income and you look young, look into registering with Central Casting as an 18 to look younger performer. Or you could work at one of the stores in the area, maybe they'll give you flexible enough hours.

Best of luck to you,
Marianne

There is nothing wrong with following your dreams but you need a back up plan. What can you do to support yourself? If your career does not pan out, what can you do for a good paying job? I suggest you think about this, the years have a way of passing by and people blindly following their dreams do not prepare for the future. Can you go to school and get a degree to teach drama? Or find another avenue that keeps you in the field while you are trying.

It is never too late. You are capable of fulfilling any dream you have if you also have the ambition and the persistence it takes in the film industry. good luck to you. you are 22, its perfect timing...the world is yours

hey good luck hope u make it

You are absolutely not too old to start acting!!!!! Your 20's are for finding out what you like and what you don't like. I have one question for you; have you ever acted in anything before? Take a short introductory class if you have not. Do not jump in and sign up for a one or two year program. You may love it, you may not.

I took my first acting class at 28! And I loved it, but I also decided that I didn't want to do it for a living. So I have a 9-5 job and take non-paid acting roles in student films and non equity plays in my free time and I love it. 22 sounds like the perfect age to try acting out.

I think experience acting is more important than classes. Why pay for classes if you find out you are no good at it? That's what being in some community theatre plays will tell you. I also think the NYFA is a rip-off and there is a better way to get professional training that is more efficient and less costly. You are a good age to start. How were you going to pay for NYFA? You certainly don't want to try to become an actor if you have a lot of debt. The first thing recommended for aspiring actors is to have a financial base. I recommend you go to actingcareerstartup.com and read everything there. Don't buy the book.
