Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Can someone help me find an upbeat song?

Question:I'm trying out for High School Musical at community theatre. I really need an upbeat, fun song. I would love if it could have a hint of hip-hop to it, but that isn't really necessary.

If you guys really want to get specific, I'm trying out for Taylor, or Kelsey. I can belt and sing in a high head-voice, so I'd love to show off my vocal range. If I had to choose one, I'd rather showcase my ability to belt. I'm currently an alto, but I can hit a soprano 2 range. Once again, I need to stress that it has to be a really upbeat, fun, energetic song!!!

i'm here to give you a director's perspective (i'm an actor too, so i understand what it's like to audition).

from a directors point of view, people worry too much about their audition song. what i look for is someone who can put their music in front of the accompanist (mark your music where you want the accompanist to begin and end), pop up on stage and sing 16 strong bars of music. no hesitation, no excuses, no taking music up there because they don't know the words, no asking the accompanist to change the key, no starting over...you get the idea.

i'm never turned off by someone singing a song from the show they're auditioning for so don't be afraid to sing something from hsm.

do something you're comfortable with, that you don't have to think about and that shows the best voice you have.

lot's of people try to go for a "money note." if you can hit it without even thinking about it, go for it. if not, pick something else. if i'm really interested in someone i will vocalize them to see if they have the range for the part.

i could recommend lots of songs, but not knowing your type (tall, short, black, white, ingenue, character actor, age, weight) it would be a waste of time. you have to pick what you're comfortable with.

now, from an actor's p.o.v. i understand how important it is to represent yourself well with a song when all you've got is 16 bars. but believe me, the way you walk in, your resume, the first few notes out of your mouth and anyone who has done any casting knows almost immediately if they're interested.

so relax, sing something you know well, and have fun!!

break a leg and i hope you get the part you want!
