Position:Home>Theater & Acting> I want to be an actor, but my dad doesn't support me.?

Question:Hey, I'm a 17 year old guy from NJ who wants to act. I auditioned for a play at my school and got the lead part of a cross dresser. I didn't care I just wanted to act, and I was the only guy to have the guts to wear a dress! I was praised for my performance. Then I had to change my role to a thief because my dad wasn't "comfortable" with it. I'm doing my part as a thief and I'm going to college in September for economics, but thats not what I want to do! I want to act! I know that I can act. I'm a really motivated person, anything I put my mind to I can do but I'm only 17! Now my friends and I are saving money to buy a video camera to make films and show them on youtube. To me that's not enough, I dreaming big, if I have to do it by myself, I will. I'll hate myself if I ended up being some guy working for a company for the rest of his life, not knowing what I could've been if I put myself out there. Help me out guys, I need to know where do I start so I can clear my mind a bit.

Wait a few months until you're 18. Then you can do whatever you want.

Don't be snotty with your Dad. He raised you, paid for it, and has at least gotten you this far. A 17 year old throwing something back in an adult parent's face is not going to fly, trust me. (That is directed at the advice given directly above me.) ****************

When you're 18, you're free to leave home and do what you want - Provided you don't need his money and are willing to support yourself. If you want it bad enough, you'll find a way to pay your way and get some experience and training.

Don't mean to be harsh. I had the same kind of parents, and my only solution was to go out on my own. Parents know what kind of a one-in-a-million shot acting/theatre/film is, and it is generally hard to convince them otherwise. Heck, I work in the industry and do not recommend it unless you are very tough, and very determined.

Go New Jerzey thats were i grew up so i give you props for that. Forget your dad. Just try. Go to college and major in that. If not go online and try to see any casting calls. Maybe you can start in a commercial and you'll make it big. If this helps and you do make it big (which i hope you do) dont forget who helped you on yahoo answrs . Best of luck!!!!!!!!!!

Look into majoring in drama. If your dad is opposed, you might have to pay for your education on your own.
Know this though....there are lots of talented young actors out there....almost none of them make it.

Just tell your dad straight up that you will be an actor and that if he chooses to resent you for it then it's his problem and he is just ruining his chance at getting along with you for nothing.

In the end, parents dont matter compare to what you want to do. When you can move out and live on your own, you can do whatever you want. Maybe find one of his dreams (that maybe he even made a career out of), and make him think about how you acting is like him doing his career.

Join the drama departmetn at school, take acting lessons.Well first you need training. You can just get an agent and
expect to become famous. It takes a LOT of hard work and a lot
of people don't realize that. See if there are any acting classes in your area and start there.

Will Smith once said in an interview that he regrets that he didn't take more chances and explore the "bi" side of his character in "Six Degrees of Separation" because he was afraid of what his friends at the time would say. A good role is a good role, and it's called acting because you are pretending to be something you are not.

You're father may never support the idea of you becoming an actor. What can you do? Continue to take acting classes and audition for shows. I'm 41 and my parents still ask me when I'm going to grow up and do something productive. They just don't understand the feeling I get when performing in front of an audience.

Take some acting classes in college & persue your dream. You have to live your life for you, not your Dad. He'll be okay.

if i were your dad i would not let my son act cause then sooner or later u would turn gay. im just telling the truth
