You mean, trying out for Plays - as Middle School Production? Or A play that's being produced outside of the School environment? Or you're talking about that in able to enroll in a drama class, you will have to perform to see if you're qualify? (There are acting classes here in New York where students need to audition before enrolling in a class)

1) If you are trying out for Play production done by the school Or Play that's produced outside of the School - I would first find out the name of the play. If you can, try to see if the library have the script. Read it, and know which characters that you're interested in. I will also contac the person who posted the auditio notice, and ask what the talents need to prepare/bring to the audition. This will give you an idea what you need to pratice or prepared for the audition.

2) If it is for enrolling in the school drama class, and you have no experience in acting, I would suggest you to being a monologue (it can be from a play, film, TV...etc) that you are famliar with. Keep it simple and short. Memorize the words, understand the context, and put yourself in the shoe of the character, and pratice in front of the mirror. I'm sure they're not expecting you to put on an Oscar winning performnace - but they want to see from you, is your passion and interest in the craft of acting. Sometimes, you will be asked questions like "Why do you to act?" "What do you see yourself doing in the next 10 years?" "What can we offer you to reach your goal?"

Just be opened minded, prepared, and RELAX when you meet them.

Good Luck.

There really isn't much you can do to make a good impression at tryouts for the plays except to be energetic and smiling and read and or sing well. Make sure you read with meaning and not too fast. IT is important that they can understand you clearly. Take all the speech and drama stuff at school if you are interested in acting and do all the activities you can.

well all the answers are good so far so pay attention to them, but if you really need a starter point, what I would do is just take a begginning drama class which should just let you in. I would still though just to have one practice some sort of monologue.
