Look at other actors' headshots and then go to a professional photographer who does actors' headshots. Don't get something artsy-fartsy and all shadowy. You want:
8X10
black and white
glossy
head and shoulders

Not 8 1/2 X 11
color
matte finish
full body shot

(There has been some discussion about going to color and 3/4 body shot, but the industry standard is still teh 8X10 b&w glossy)

This will cost you a little money, but it is well worth it. Don't get a friend to do it. Save up the money, go to a professional photographer who'll hava someone there to do make-up and will give you contact sheets. The photographer will probably keep the negatives, but if you can get the negs, you'll save yourself a little money the next time you need a new batch of headshots. (Just remember to keep your headshot and resume PRINTED ON THE BACK current. Nothing's worse than a 30-year old using his college headshot to try to get young parts and having to explain that "I've done stuff since then."
