Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Who agrees that Grease is totally overrated?

Question:For some reason, Grease is very overrated. I do not like that musical. It's average, but it's not brilliant. How come it was voted best musical of all time?? The Sound of Music should have won! Or Butch Cassidy. Or West Side Story.
Grease has particularly no story and no real outline. I'm not trying to be nasty, it's my opinion. There are far better musicals out there. I think The Sound of Music should have won. It was ranked second best musical anyway.

I agree. Its an okay musical but really, its not one of the best. Honestly, there is really no plot and that so called 'plot' is vastly overused, boring and dry!

Who agrees that this is a time wasting question? And Im just wasting my time answering it? lol You say "for some reason," you think "grease is overated" Your not very sure of your question. You need to look at the time of when grease came out thats why those other movies that you mentioned didnt get the "best musical award" Grease was AFTER there times.
Is it totally overrated? That could mean anything to anyone. Your intitled to an opinion, and I think that its just entertainment I liked it when I was younger probably couldnt watch it now lol. Challenging question. ( :

It was voted best musical of all time? Are you serious? I would definitely NOT call it the best musical of all time. It's fun and light...good for a night's entertainment, but it can't hold a candle to musicals like "West Side Story" or "Jesus Christ Superstar".

If it was voted best musical of all time, then I would agree that that is an overrating.

Grease is successful as nostalgia. People relate to it. It has nothing to do with the fact that it is not a very good musical.
There have been many shows and will be many more that find a audience even though they stink.

I do

Totally agree!

I like the movie a lot but the new production is horrible and hopefully it will close soon. I totally hate the chick they chose to play Sandy!

As a movie musical, I also think it is slightly overrated and would have chosen several others ahead of it -- Sound of Music, West Side Story, Oklahoma, Guys and Dolls, My Fair Lady, King and I, Kiss Me Kate, Singing in the Rain, American in Paris -- but you also have to remember that at one time, Grease was the longest running show in Broadway history. It's been passed now by several -- A Chorus Line, then Cats, then Phantom and Les Mis -- but its APPEAL is nearly universal. EVERYBODY goes to high school; not everybody flees from the Nazis over the Alps or is ruler of Siam or a member of a New York gang,
