Heaven's no. The American Theatre dates back to the Revolutionary War, when patriotic plays of many kinds were written by Royall Tyler among others.

Sorry to say it wasn't, but is wasn't. As Doc says, there were major theatres in the US long, long before Vaudeville came into being. Vaudeville (which is more of a variety performance than play) didn't show up until the 1880s.
