Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Do community theater actors get paid, and if so how much?

Question:I'm a dental hygienist , but I would like to do some acting on the side, in perhaps a community theater. However, if there is no pay involved I wouldnt be able to afford anything. I figured there must be SOME money involved right?

Executives in the Theater are usually paid (aka: Executive Director, Marketing & Programs Director, Volunteer Coorindator, etc) but most of the time Actors and basic Crew are not paid.

If your dealing with a Musical, most Musical Director's are paid, as well as the musicians who play for them.

However, our Community Theater pays our actors (and pretty good too) at anywhere from $45.00 - $500.00 per Show.

Just because you get paid as an actor does not mean your not working in Community Theater.

In my experience, the difference between "Professional" and "Community Theater" is that Professional is almost always a for profit venture, community theater... never. Actors & crew in Pro theater are union, Comm... Hardly ever.

not neccasarily. I have done community theater in the past, and thre was no pay involved. Most community theaters can't afford to pay their actors, the people who take part just like acting, and like the involvement.
I loved doing comm. theater, just started working too many hours to do it on the side.
If you want to do it, do it as a side thing.
Most times in order to get paid for acting work, you have to be SAG member or equity actor.

Community theatre's don't pay, it's volunteer. The only people who *might* get paid are the musicians if it's a musical and in some cases, the director, MD or producer.
If it paid, it kind of takes away the point of it being "community".

Ditto Docs statements for emphasis - community theatre does not pay. Musicians and Directors sometimes are, but actors almost never. That's sort of the point - the play is being acted by non-professional community members.

you might be able to find a theatre that does professional work though and still has open community auditions. I have done some of that myself. but most of the time community thatere is just for funandperformance. some commuinty thatres do so well because they don't pay their actors but the actors they have keep comgin there and are good.

Not normally. The last community theatre job I had, I had to fight to get pay, and I was the Stage Manager.

But all companies are different, and if they like you then pretty much all producers are willing to work out something.

But honestly, with community groups, I've never made more then $100 for a month. So don't go in expecting much, or anything.

No..But Directors and stage Desighners do.
