Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Tips on starting acting?

Question:First of all I'm not really looking at acting as a career, I just want to try out for the school play this fall. But unlike a bunch of others, the drama department at my school is super, super picky. And they have a right to be, because there's tons of people trying out. Every single production its the SAME EXACT PEOPLE (mostly juniors - next year they'll be seniors so I'll still have to go up against them), give or take a few. Any tips to really wow them and stand out for the crowd? I've never done any acting before save for a middleschool play when I was a "nararrator" which was a disaster because my family was there so I was embarrassed to go all out.

If say your going out for or auditioning for a play, pick a character that you can relate to. The performance you give will be more believable,
because any emotions you put in it will be real. That's what people want to see...truthful performances.
Now since this is only a "school play" this advice may not pertain to it. But if you approach it in this manner you'll most likely "stand out" from everyone else....because they're only seeing it as a "school play."

But I can't stress enough how CAREFUL you should be if your acting in a role that calls for alot of drama and you'll have to call on real heavy emotions for that.

Definitely consult w/ the drama teachers in the dept.

Do something that will make you stand out from the rest! With me, when i tried out, i made it past the singing part and then we had a dance audition and I am not that good so i did a cart wheel but I was comical about it and I made sure the judges remembered me in a good way and they did! I was excepted in the musical! This happened last month! Good Luck!
