When auditioning for a musical, you're pretty much always going to have to sing. If you aren't a strong singer, you just have to work that much harder to pull out a good audition. I'm not familiar with Tom Sawyer, so I don't know if there are any acting only roles, but you should mention to the director, either directly or on your audition form, that you are really only interested in being a character who does not have to sing. During the acting part of the audition, if there is one, you are going to really have to shine to make up for the fact that your singing audition was probabaly not the strongest the director had seen. Depending on the level of this production (high school, community theater, etc.), as long as the director knows where you are coming from, he most likely won't throw you out the window immediately for not having the best voice if you communicate with him and really pull through in the acting portion.

Well, here's the thing about musicals--they want good singers.

If you don't want to sing, just act, then I suggest you audition for plays instead of musicals.

Well, your only hope is if the role you want can act/talk his way through the singing parts. Some examples of this is how Robert Preston did Harold Hill in The Music Man and how Rex Harrison played Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. Both talked their way through much of their songs. They did sing too but not big grand singing. Check them out, maybe the style will help you prepare for your audition. Just in the way that they acted through their songs more than sang them. Maybe you can do the same.

You should still know the show and the role you hope to get as best you can. You should do the same for whatever audition material you plan to use.

To be in a musical, you got to have a decent voice. Everyone wants good singers. If you are an okay singer, and a wonderful actress, you will most likely get a small part. If you have a very strong voice, and you have decent acting skills, most likely you will get a bigger part or a lead.

Find something else to do. If you can't sing, forget musicals.

Actually I dont rember tom sawyer being a play i saw it once and it was a straight play but anyway the key to audtitiong for a musical and now wnating to sing is to so a powerful monologue and an ok song that way if they do cast u it wont be a singing role!
