Question Home

Position:Home>Theater & Acting> I am a high school student, looking into an acting career. Any advice on how to

Question:in my humble opinion, anybody could be acting but it depends on what you want and be specific. for example - you might be happiest just doing local plays and not being paid for it. many people do this and love it. it builds confidence and you meet plenty of great people.

on the other hand, do you want to be a star? and if so what type? movies? tv? theatre?

if thats the case you may be in for a long hard road. training is the key and accepting offers to start that may be less than ideal. you can gain experience and knowledge of the ins and outs of the industry plus solidify your intenions within the industry.

many famous actors start in theatre and work hard for many years to be 'overnight' successes.

versitility and presence is a bonus in the industry. play an instrument, sing or dance can be benefical to you on your search.

i prefer to think in more poitive terms like 'following direction;' rather handle critisism. (even tho thats a good trait to have)

many people think they can walk into the industry knowing so little about it but the fact is that it'll chew you up and spit you out faster than it takes to send away one head shot.

what sets you apart from your peers or sticking out from the rest?

my story is about how i scored a TV commecial thinking carefully before doing the actual audition.

i was to play an office dork at a christmas party trying to hit on the girls etc.

i busted open an ink pen and splattered it all down the breast pocket. they certainly remembered me! it was a simple and effective way of retaining their attention.

good luck in your journey and i hope you find it.

Get used to starving and living in your car. For every successful actor that you've heard of, there are a thousand who never even came close.

u should have started acting a lllllllooooooooonnnnnnnnggggggggg way back! I started when I was 8.

Go for it theater is wonderful!

Go for it!
Don't be too dissapointed though if things dont work out.
Like someone else said, there are thousands who didn't make it.
And Johnny Depp started acting when he was 30, so I think you'll be alright haha.

don't listen to the people who tell you that you should have started long ago.

I have a friend who didn't start acting until he was 19,
and he went from ensemble to lead role in 3 years on mainstage theatre.

I think you should gain more experience by auditioning for local theatres and doing some more plays and musicals first, and then after you get some good advice from doing that, and get used to how theatre life is, you can look for an agent and see what there is out there for you !

Good luck :D

i say do some research on colleges. find one that you like, and a program that you can get into. make sure that they have an accredited theatre program. which is usually very easy to do, because if a school is accredited, they'll brag as much as they can.

get into the program and work your way from there.

there is also URTA and UPTA and SETC all theatre actor "cattle calls" you can look them up as well. these conventions are usually looking for people who only want summer work, but there are a few theaters who are looking to fill other rolls.

ultimately, my suggestion is college. you can build up your resume there, and do as much as you can while you're in college. taking on small rolls in shows that the school doesn't produce. credits outside of school look better to theatres.

oin the drama departmetn at school, take acting lessons.

Well first you need training. You can't just get an agent and
expect to become famous. It takes a LOT of hard work and a lot
of people don't realize that. See if there are any acting
classes in your area and start there.
