Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Audition...Choreography Advice?

Question:I am male, 20, bass vocal, and I am advanced in both singing and acting, but I am not skilled in dancing. Sure after practice I can figure out a choreographed dance well enough, but I hardly ever get stuff right the first time. I would seek out lessons (If I could find them) but my problem is right now I don't have time to learn because the next show I want to be cast in auditions take place next week!

The Show is Man of La Mancha if it helps.

I am familiar with the director. I have not as of yet been cast in any of his shows but I was a valuable and neccessary crew member for him recently. (they would not have been able to do some thigns if they didn't have a set of hands there (me) to do it).

I want any advice on things that I can do to help me prepare for the audition regarding being able to follow choreography.

First of all, awesome showing I am crossing my fingers for you (I played Aldonza), the only men that had really intricate dance steps were the guys that played the horse and the donkey during I Don Quixote, and the gypsies I would not worry about dancing too much it is more movement based show than actual dancing. There is some choreographed fighting, if you know some basic steps from other choreography experience I would practice those steps like a grapevine or a box step or a timestep or whatever you already know just to get in the habit of dancing. If you can't find lessons in your area, i would consider going to a country bar where they do line dancing (there will usually be one night a week they teach you dances) or a salsa bar because you will get in the habit of learning new dances and in the habit of having to pick them up quickly which is how you learn to pick it up quickly and there is less pressure there than a well lit dance class with big mirrors everywhere the atmosphere is more about having fun. :)

You do have time, get to some dance lessons!

Honestly, the best way to prepare for a dance audition is to get into some classes. You're right, you don't have time to really learn technique, but if you can get into a class that does combinations, that will help you pick up steps faster. Are there any studios with drop in classes nearby?
