she knows her husband is hiding something. she stabs herself to show her husband she can withstand any secret he will tell her. she gives "proof of [her] constancy" (ability to keep a secret) by causing the wound and shows that she can "bear that with patience." she can endure the pain IE: not snitch the news to the streets of rome.
