Position:Home>Theater & Acting> I'm trying out for Aida in May?

Question:Apparently they want someone ethnic for the role, and lucky me, they're in short supply around here (Arizona Suburbia)! What kind of songs should I prepare for the audition? Any suggestions? :) Also, I've heard of Aida before, but I'm not really sure what it's about. All of my friends have been begging me to try out for the role, and they said it had something to do with an Egyptian princess. :o Am I right? And it's cool because I'm actually part Egyptian. ;D

Aida is based on an old Opera of the same title. It is a love triangle. Aida is a Nubian princess, but she is taken to Egypt as a slave (this is the intention, then love happes, etc.) It is a new musical. It opened in 2000 so you should sing something contemporary. It is also very epic and it is a story of strength so maybe a selection from "The Color Purple" or "The Life" you could sing something from another Disney show (Mary Poppins, The Lion King, or The Little Mermaid - but be sure that the song you choose appears in the broadway version of the show's score) even something like Defying Gravity from Wicked would work. If they are asking for 2 songs make sure they are contrasting pieces (like one ballad and one up tempo, or one comedy and one dramatic)
Other than that have fun!!
Hope that helps.
P>S> Disney is making a movie of the show for release in 2010!
You can find a full synopsis on Wikipedia

Can't you pull up a couple Wikipedia pages? Too difficult?

WOW! That would be amazing!

Good luck!

Get a VHS or DVD recording of Aida and watch it.

Google turned up well over 10 pages

You might find the synopsis helpful. Will they want you to sing in english or italian?
My old theater teacher said to never sing in a language where you do not know what it means when you are singing.
Two things about that, how can you emote the part if youdo not know what you are saying, and hoe do you know you are not saying something best left to the locker room!!!
Good luck on the part.
