There are the orchestra memebers, who play the music. Also, there is a musical director who rehearses the musical with the cast and also directs the orchestra. There is usually a rehearsal pianist, who plays for the cast during rehearsals when the full orchestra is not available. I don't know how far back you are asking about, but there is clearly the person who writes the music.
