Position:Home>Theater & Acting> If I am slightly overweight, should I bother auditioning for Disney?

Question:I am a 25yr old, slightly overweight (15-20lbs) actress but I don't look THAT heavy...I had surgery on my foot in December and due to the inactivity I've gained some weight. Disney is coming to Atlanta to audition people for character actors next Friday. Should I even bother? (If I audition and don't get a call back I have to wait at least 6 months to audition again)

Note: This is not a "one-in-a-lifetime" opportunity as they audition at least twice a year.

If you have a chance to audition, and you have nothing to lose, then you should definitely give it a go. Auditions are always a great source to get experience for future auditions. You can see what other people do to learn a bit more about these "professional auditions". Also, sometimes you also get feedback from the judges/audience. This is also a great source for improvement. Don't let your appearance interfere with your self-confidence. Just don't think about it, and do your best. Remember to always shoot for the moon. Even if you miss you'll still end up with the stars

Tell me more about these auditions. Who, exactly, runs them and how did you hear about them?

You may want to wait, and get yourself back in tip-top shape. Image is a big factor. It is not unusual for people to prejudge you on your weight alone. Good Luck whatever you do!

I used to work for them and I used to ask the people who played open face characters and they told me that Disney has a set standard and basically if you don't fit the costume you don't get hired. They said that they would be tested every six months to make sure they were right for the part both physically and acting wise. If you gained weight to not fit the costume snug, then you were out. I knew a lot of great women who were good at their parts but got kicked out because they found someone with a better body for the part. Hope that helps their rules are really strict.

You should definitely audition. If you don't even bother, then there is no chance that you'll get the part. Just give it a try. You never know, you just might get a call back. If you don't get it, then you can just audition again. But you might as well just try instead of screening yourself out. If you're a really good actress, then the slight weight issue shouldn't be a problem.

You should go for it!

If you don't get it, try again. Don't let that bring you down.

Good luck,
ANGEL!
