Position:Home>Theater & Acting> What are all the girl main parts in Seussical?

Question:Gertrude McFuzz - the main female lead in the play. She's a dorky, vain sort of bird, and is in love with Horton. She changes her appearance to get him to notice her, but it doesn't work and he ends up liking her because of who she is. Usually played by a mezzo-soprano. Has a few lines that should be belted.

Mayzie LaBird - Usually played by a soprano. She's full of herself and wants all the attention. She's also carefree and irresponsible, as she convinces Horton to take her egg for her. The play hints at her being a prostitute-type character, but it's nothing too bad, since it IS Seussical ;)

Sour Kangaroo - Can be an alto, mezzo, or soprano. She and all the jungle citizens are convinced that Horton's the "biggest blame fool in the Jungle of Nool" and goes so far as to arrest him at the end of the play, but decides to help protect the Whos with him and Gertrude.

Bird Girls - a "flambuoyant girl group of the Jungle". Sort of narrators to the story. Usually there are three (one alto, one mezzo, and one soprano) but there can be more, as it's all really up to the director. They're in most of the songs, except for the solos/duets. They're kind of like mini-Mayzies, I guess.

Mrs. Mayor - Mr. Mayor's (Mayor of Whoville) wife, mother of Jojo. Can be played by an alto, mezzo, or soprano. She's in all of the Who scenes.

The Cat and JoJo can be played by either girls or boys:

Cat in the Hat - can be played by alto, mezzo, or soprano. She/He's a mischievous character, the one who starts everything. He/she means well. The Cat also plays many "little" parts like Dr. Dake, the news reporter, and the marshal. On stage most of the play.

Jojo - Usually played by either a mezzo or alto. He/she is the mayor's son/daughter. At the beginning of the play, he/she is just a boy/girl who finds an "unusual hat" on stage. When she picks it up, the Cat pops out, and she enters the story as a Who. Also on stage nearly all of the play, one of the main characters.

The Cat and Jojo are both played by girls in my school's production of Seussical, but I think normally they're played by guys. However, it's up to the director and it doesn't make much of a difference - you just have to change the lyrics to "girl", etc.
