Most directors do it because it is what they love, and they are good at it, not because they want to be well known. Most "working" directors make their living doing small films, shorts, documentaries, commercials, television, and industrials. There are maybe, how many living "well known" directors? Maybe ten? Fifteen? New York University graduates hundreds of film majors each year, at that one school alone. Multiply that by every school in the US or abroad that has a good film program, and you have a heck of a lot of film directors want to be well known. If you're good, a more admirable ambition might be wanting to be a film director that makes a living without needing to have another job.
