What are Union Auditions?

You don't have to be a Union actor to do union work ... you become a union actor by doing a qualifying number of Union jobs.

Well, you can't just "become" union. The Union is Actors Equity, and you become a union member by performing in professional shows that are affiliated with the union, usually at smaller professional theatres that cast both union and non-union performers. Non-union performers are not permitted to attend union auditions. Union dues, once you have joined are about $1200 a year at this point.
