Position:Home>Theater & Acting> How do you cry on the spot?

Question:Don't use personal experiences as your motivation. Be your character. Know everything you can about that character's life and history, motivations and personality. Know everything about the character's past which would lead them to cry at that particular point. When you are truly in touch with your character's situation you will be able to feel what they would feel. That is true acting.

think of the worst thing that has or can happen to you in life

think of something really sad and or pinch urself really hard

think about someone that was close to you that has died

edit: seriously, try it - if it doesn't bring you to tears then there's something wrong

I don't know, but I just cried thinking about how to cry. I think I'm just aware of my tear ducts and work up a tear, (on the spot) then think about something that makes me sad or angry, and let it flow. Good Luck!

what i do is think of the most tragic thing that's happened to me........ and actually try to make that thing worse, make it really sad, to where you can't stand it, and just burst out crying! that's what i do....... and it works w/ my dad....hehe

If you seriously into chracter, then your in the situation. try to think if thhis really happened to you, or some thing soo sad, like a relative dying

Try to create as many stimuli as possible to evoke a sad reaction. Find a visual image, add dialogue and even music. The image should envelope you, and thus create a more real response.

Don't use personal experience. When you are directly associated with your stimulus, it can become hard to control your reaction. This may compromise your performance and, if done repeatedly, will leave you emotionally drained.

If you're into that sort of thing, musicals are often a good way to evoke this. I find 'A Little Fall of Rain' from Les Mis particularly moving. A video can be found here: http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=_ptdGPt9wt...

make the facial movements. it will remind your body what it feels like to cry. after that, it will come easy

'kay, dumb as it sound try plucking a nose hair. I know it sounds stupid and painful and it is. stupid and painful, I mean. The plucking of a nose hair will make your eyes water and will give the appearence of crying. You don't want to cry and get all snobbery and stuffy.

If you can, hold an onion underneath your face/eyes if possible

Its a little hard to explain, but i just sorta "push" the tears...
not, like with my hands, idk i guess i'm just a natural..
SORRY, that sounded really pompous...sorry..

I don't cry. I don't have feelings

Chris has it nailed. All the other junk is Method crapola. If you know how to act and are doing that and your character is suppossed to cry, you will cry. It is as simple as that. for more info read my profile and write me at my aol address (Threeser also has a good idea for stage, it is called the James-Lange theory of emotional expression, we have the physical manifistations first and then we feel the emotion.--Not as good as really acting, though)

There are three strategies.

1. Think of something sad that happened to you or feel remorse.

2. Think of something really sad that didn't happen to you(ex.your family murdered)

3. Study people crying and picture them when you cry.

Hope this helps!
