Once excellent way to get union experience (and join the union at the same time) is to go out on a union children's theatre tour. You would need some serious prior experience, but Theatreworks USA always needs good Stage Managers who are willing to take charge of their 6 month tours. They are Equity, and you would join the union. Also, they are pretty hooked up, so you could make some decent connections. Some universities now have Stage Management programs, but my opinion is that this is nonsense - SMing is something you need to learn by doing.

Break a leg!

I am in the UK, so went to Drama School and trained. After a number of years I started getting work in the West End of London. I suggest what you do is contact an organisation called (in the U.S.) the Stage Managers Association. They will be able to give you guidance on how to start. I get almost all of my work via the UK version. They are brilliant.
Good luck.

Get a degree in theatre participate in every project you can, volunteer for your local PROFESSIONAL theatre companies, you will need to become equity asap!

GOOD LUCK!
