I did the Sound of Music a couple years ago and the Butler is probably the biggest nonsinging speaking role. That being said, he doesn't have a ton of lines, but randomly pops onstage, says a few lines, and then pops off.

However, there are no small parts, only small actors! His lines are hilarious, so take the part!

Like they say, there are no small parts, only small actors. If you don't want the part, there are other people who will be very happy to take it. Everybody has to start somewhere and you are starting with the wrong attitude. Play the part & learn all you can.

We did the Sound of Music, and I don't remember there BEING a butler. But its possible that there've cast you as the butler aka housekeeper. In which case, its as large a part as some of the children. When I was in the show some of the "background" characters had more lines than me, and I was Marta! But there are NO small parts, only small actors.

This story is THE most inspirational thing I've ever read in reference to theatre, and I just thought I'd pass it along.

The Butler's name is Franz and he turns out to be a Nazi...he doesn't have ALOT of lines like the kids and he doesn't sing...but he is memorable because he betrays the family...
