Belting is when you push your chest voice up into your head voice register. There are debates whether everyone can do this. I'm in the camp that a true chesty belt (a la Idina Menzel or Sutton Foster) is something you have to be born with, just as the length and width of your vocal cords will determine if you're a soprano or an alto and whether you have a lighter or heavier voice. Christina Aguilera will never be able to hit high notes with the purity of Sarah Brightman and SB will never be able to belt like CA, even if they each can "cross over" in their own way. So, the first thing you need to do is learn what your vocal type is. If you are a soprano, and especailly a lighter voiced soprano ( a light lyric vs a dramatic), belting may not be in your cards.

If that's the case, It is possible to learn how to mix (when you blend your chest and hear voice together) and get a similiar sound. Attempting to belt, if your voice is not capable of it, can be extremely damaging and you are just about garaunteed to get vocal nodes.

If you can't currently belt on your own, go to a teacher who can either teach you how to belt or at least how to mix. Check out the National Assocaition of Teachers of Singing - www.nats.org for certified teachers in your area, or ask in the music department of your local college/university.

Good luck!

well first of all, it's hard to train yourself to be a belter and in come cases it's bad. if your in an ensemble you want to blend with other voices. if your on stage it's a good thing. but how i would explain how to train yourself to be able to do it when you need to is first pick a note that you're comfortable with. then take a really deep breath and let your diapragm(sp?) expand and push your stomach out then push it back in as hard as you can and sing. it probably will take you awhile because most people are born wiht it i guess. i was always just able to do it. and it was really hard for me to blend in with the rest of the ensemble but when i got on stage it was a blessing to have it because i was the loudest and most of the shows i did, i didn't have a mic, it might have been on accident that that happened because we didn't have enough for everyone who needed one or some people need more than one mic. but if it was a scene where i was just singing and others were talking, i wouldn't have a mic and i could sing to the back of the theater.
good luck.

I do, but if you really want to know you should take voice lessons. You can get tips online, but until someone actually hears your voice and watches you while you sing, you could learn incorrectly and damage your voice. Many people use their throat to belt if they haven't been instructed properly and this strains the voice.
