Question:and what did he do

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: and what did he do

Stage name of Sergi Alexyev d. 1937. He helped make modern acting realistic and wrote several books about it which influenced (not always in a good sense) acting teachers all over the world and especially in the US. He is considered the father of modern acting. However, the dumb stuff that he did that is illustrated in the previous answer does not really help an actor do a good job. Stanislavski and The Method which is based on misinterpretation of Stanislavki's ideas are now passe` and there are better ways of being an effective actor

He was a theater practitioner. His ideas were that one should actually BECOME the character that you are portraying. His focus was making Theater as real life as possible. He did exercises such as singling out an actor, and asking them questions about their character (such as family history/favorite color, etc...) that the actor had to answer and defend in character. He also did mime workshops, making a place as real as possible (one person would mime a room, and find a reason to leave, and then another person had to enter it, add something, use all of the things that the previous person had set up, and then find a reason to leave--if they mimed something in a different location or a different height, they couldn't leave the room). He wrote a few books, one being "An actor prepares", that details his practices. There are a lot of classes on his system, but his ideas are seen as "extreme" to many actors nowadays. A lot of people (even film actors) use SOME of his practices, but to actually become a character is an idea that Stanislavski, himself, later rejected. He said it wasn't practical for theater. Good luck on your quest for Stanislavski knowledge! Hope I helped a bit.
