Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: why did re. hale return to salem? why does abilgail williams live with rev. parris?why were so many accused of witch craft?

The play is meant to represent the Communist witch hunts that took place in the 1950s. I'm not sure why Reverend Hale returned to Salem, but Abigail lives with the Reverend Parris because he is her uncle.

Many people were accused of witchcraft because, like with the Communist witch hunts, there was a mass hysteria, with everyone coming under suspicion and being branded, in this case, as a witch. The play is meant to show the effects of the need for revenge in Abigail and how it led to Proctor being accused of witchcraft by Mary Warren - because witchcraft was the one thing that could ruin you.

In Hollywood during the Communist witch hunts, it was the same thing - you could be blacklisted by going to the funeral of someone who belonged - or ONCE belonged - to the Communist party, the mass hysteria was so great.

Abby's parents are dead. so she lives with her uncle. so many were accused because if you didn't like someone, all you had to do was call them a witch and their life was over
