Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Any Comedic Acting Books?

Question:Okay. Does anyone know of any books, links, stratigies, techniques(and so on and so forth) that strengthen your ability for comedic acting? Dramatic acting is just fine for me, But I need to work a bit on my comedy. Strangely I'm great with comedic musicals(probably because of my huge facial expressions and etc.I also crack people up off stage. I there something wrong?) but i can't seem to convert all my comedic skills into comedic plays. Help! Puhlezzze! Thanxx.

The key to comedy is timing. Watch comedy movies and figure out how each actor uses timing. When you are in a comedy, just be more realistic, most musicals are exaggerated, how many of us burst out into song and dance in everyday life? Comedy is not so exaggerated as a musical. Another key is not to act, do not make faces and pretend. Good acting is reacting realistically to the stimuli of the scene. Just do that and you will be fine. There are sections in Rehearsal by Miriam Franklin about acting comedy effectively. The book has been out of print for years but can be purchased at bookfinder.com for very little. Do not get the first edition. YOu also could do a web search of How to Act in Comedy and see what pops up.

Srry. I really appreciate IT Doc.

  • Read up on Commedia dell'arte it will teach you about comic archetypes, granted it is way over the top, but as I say it is a lot easier to bring an actor down, than to bring him up!
